Otsego residents question Menasha waste impacts on their health

Longtime residents of Otsego, Mich., believe historical Menasha Corp paper mill waste and contamination has led to incidences of cancer in their community. At a meeting on Oct. 26, 2019, federal officials with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) said that Otsego’s drinking water was likely impacted by sludges and biocides. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) is investigating elevated levels of PFAS chemicals in soils and groundwater where Menasha spread sludge on local farm fields.
